Somewhere over the rainbow…

When we say “vivid colors,” we mean vivid! Turn up the saturation, go big and bold, be courageous! Here are some colorful design styles that have caught our eye.

Have you ever heard of Kawaii? Not the island, but the Japanese word meaning “cute” or “adorable”. This cuteness-overload trend is inescapable in Japan. From fashion to vending machines, from manga and anime to street signs or chopsticks—everywhere you look there are colorful animals, cute creatures, cakes or ice creams with funny little faces, the list goes on. And in the world of Kawaii, it’s all about pastels: pink, baby blue or yellow.

One popular and summery direction to take Kawaii: Kawaii ice cream—ice cream scoops that are depicted as little animals or creatures. Heart-meltingly cute.

The best of the 80s, 90s…

…and today! Neon is in, baby! The shamelessly bright colors of the 80s and 90s are back, enjoying a resurgence thanks to Synthwave and movies like ‘Drive’. Purple and deep pink are especially trendy at the moment.

One man’s eyesore is another man’s art. Graffiti is a transient art form, sometimes only remaining on a wall for a few hours. Its short life has one purpose: to attract attention, look really freaking cool, and leave an impression. Hence the ultra-saturated hues of spray-paint under your local bridge. Graffiti lettering is also in: Thick letters that look puffy and inflated are the best way to achieve that urban street style.

In 1980, a Milanese group of furniture, textile and ceramic designers joined together to form the Memphis Group. This ultra-hip style combines shocking colors with minimalistic geometric forms such as cones, triangles, spheres, pyramids and cubes to form a graphic explosion of colors and forms.

Check out these styles to get inspired—but don’t copy!

Choosing products for this design contest is simple: trendy, vibrant colors pop especially well on black or white products.
