How to make a hoodie

Time to up your game? If you’ve been following our guides, you know that the #1 selling item in the merch world is the front-facing graphic tee. Even if you’re killing it with tees, or you’re just ready to branch out and diversify a bit, you could use some help with hoodies because you’ve got questions. Is there anything different with how to make hoodies, or how can you be the most successful at selling them?

Here’s how to make a hoodie:

Hoodies vs Tees

hoodies vs teeshoodies vs tees

What can we tell you? Hoodies are obviously a bit different from tees, they’re a different garment altogether and have a different use case and price point. The main difference is obvious – hoodies are warmer and long-sleeved. However, it doesn’t mean that they’re cold weather only garments, and you’ll see they come in a variety of thicknesses and uses. However, like all print on demand products, our custom hoodie have no minimum for orders.

Even so, they’re not carried by all of the stores in our amazing network of store owners. What do the numbers tell us?

By the numbers

Let’s take a look at the tale of the numbers. We’re sure you’re going to want to know – first and foremost – what kind of hoodies sell. Then we’ll dive into graphics placement and types of graphics, and finally how to make hoodies.

Graphics placement

We analyzed our most successful merch stores, and here’s what we found:

  • 19% of these stores make and sell hoodies
  • Over 50% of designs are logos or quotes
  • Black and white are about 55% of the colors used

If you’re looking for success with your designs – it doesn’t have to be fancy. Only 14% of the analyzed stores had printed sleeves for their hoodies, for example. Another interesting fact – only 5% of those we looked at have design placements on the back – and only 23% have graphics on the side of the pocket.

This should give you a good idea of how to make a hoodie. Type of garments that are selling well:

  • Simple, front-facing graphics
  • Solid color backgrounds
  • Quotes
  • Cartoons and simple designs

Types of graphics

Quotes are in at 37% of all graphics, while number two is logos, at 20%. Names (similar to a brand name or logo) come in at 18%, and custom designs and faces both edges over 10%. What does this tell us? Again, simplicity is the way to go. You don’t need a graphics designer to design quotes for custom hoodies – just use our handy Printify Mockup Generator.

Designs, designed

Firstly, ask yourself what type of design you’ll need. Chances are, if it falls within the guidelines above, you may be able to make hoodies yourself. Even if you only have rudimentary photoshop skills, it’s possible to make the type of simple designs that sell.

What to do if you don’t have any skills? First, check out our awesome free designs. Next: time to farm it out. Legitimate freelancing sites such as Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com and designcrowd.com are just a few of the many sites you can take a look at to get some great designs. Remember – you’re not in this alone! There are a lot of talented people out there that can help you fill in the missing pieces to your shop!

Zip ups, while not as popular as regular pullover hoodies, are still popular – particularly among the sports segments. Zip ups are often worn by athletes, let’s not forget, so they can easily take off their jackets after warm-up or to stay warm between plays. If your site is geared towards the athletic or fitness markets, this is definitely an item to add! Again, simplicity seems to do better here, maybe because a complex design – when unzipped – can look a bit unattractive on this garment. Keep that in mind when you’re looking for a design or graphic for these zip-ups, and maybe even incorporate it! They’re a garment that lends itself to some fun!
